Jean Marie Kallus, 57, passed away peacefully on April 10, 2022 at the Westchester County Medical Center as a result of injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident on April 7, 2022.

Jean was born on June 3, 1964, and was the youngest of Paul and Margaret Hernon’s ten children. She graduated from New Hartford High School in 1982 and Union College in 1986. She was a 1989 graduate of the College of William and Mary School of Law.

Her legal career began when she took her first job as an entry-level attorney with the Legal Aid Society of Orange County in 1990. At the time of her death, 32 years later, she was still working for the Legal Aid Society as the Assistant Chief Attorney.

She met Harvey Kallus in court when both were practicing attorneys. The real “courtship” began when Harvey invited Jean on a ski trip to Lake Placid a few months later. They married on May 30, 1996. They joyfully welcomed a daughter, Margaret, in September of 1997 and a son, Benjamin, in April of 1999. Jean will be remembered as a loving and devoted wife and mother.

In addition to Harvey and their children, Jean is survived by her nine brothers and sisters: Kathy Stimpson and children David, Rebecca, and Kaitlin; Eileen and Jim Donovan and children James, Deirdre, Devin, Eugene, and Bridget; Mary Hernon and children Ryan, Eric, and Julianna; Paul and Bridget Hernon and children Paul, Eileen, and Erin; Thomas and Susan Hernon and children Nicole and Brian; Martin and Mary Hernon and children Joseph, Michael, Amanda, Elizabeth, and Rachel; Patricia Hernon; Andrew Hernon; Robert Hernon and son Ethan; her aunts Mary Fierro and Marie O’Malley; her mother-in-law, Bea Kallus; her brother-in-law Marc Kallus, his wife Leslie, and their children Richard, Arielle, Sam, and Stephan; her brother-in-law Avram Kallus; and numerous other cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews, and friends.

Jean was predeceased by her parents, her many aunts and uncles, including her beloved aunt Kathleen O’Malley, her father-in-law, Lou Kallus, her nieces Karol and Margaret Mary Donovan, and her brother-in-law Jon Stimpson.

Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 13 at 11:30am at St. John the Evangelist Church, 66 Oxford Rd, New Hartford, NY. There will not be calling hours, but the family will receive visitors following Mass. Interment will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. All arrangements have been entrusted to Friedel, Williams, and Edmunds Funeral and Cremation Services, 13 Oxford Rd, New Hartford, NY.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Jean’s memory to the Cure Alzheimer’s Fund.
