Obituary

Carl H. Schmitt, 85, of Utica and formerly of Whitesboro, passed away peacefully on December 29, 2023 at the Wynn Hospital.

Carl was born on June 8, 1938, in Utica, son of the late Carl and Helen Fertig Schmitt. He graduated from UFA and Utica College.

Carl married Judith Holzberger, who he met at Zion Lutheran Church, in New Hartford, NY on July 31, 1965. He was a proud lifelong member of the church where he enjoyed singing in the choir and served as worship assistant and youth group advisor. Carl was proud of his German heritage. He happily served as master chef of German cuisine at Oktoberfests held at Zion Church. He was an honorary member of the Utica Maennerchor, where he served on various committees and sang in the men’s choir.

Carl enjoyed many extracurricular activities. He loved football and was a high school referee. He enjoyed cross country skiing and many camping trips with family and friends. Carl also enjoyed passing on family traditions to his children such as making sauerkraut and stollen.

He worked as a program analyst at General Electric for 30 years. Carl made many close friends during his time there.

Carl is survived by his loving wife, Judith, his children, Wendy (Brian) Kowalczyk of Holland Patent, Mark Schmitt of Oswego, and Erika Schmitt-Holeck of NC; grandsons Jack and Ben Holeck. He was predeceased by his twin sister, Carol Daly.

The family would like to extend thanks to Carl’s neighbor of many years, Nick Pastorelli, for his friendship and help. Also, a special thank you to the nurses of the ICU and ICCU at the Wynn Hospital for their care and compassion.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 6, at 1:00 pm at Zion Lutheran Church, at the corner of French and Burrstone Roads, New Hartford. In keeping with Carl’s wishes, there will be no calling hours. Entombment will be at Crown Hill Memorial Park at the convenience of the family.
