Sonya V. Linakis, 89, of New Hartford and formerly of Whitesboro, died on Monday, September 16, 2024, at Utica Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.

She was born on January 10, 1935, in Utica, a daughter of the late William and Victoria Smolinsky. She married William Linakis in 1971, in New Hartford. She began her nursing career as a surgical nurse at Faxton Hospital, then moved on to Hamilton College Health Center, was the day supervisor of St. Joseph’s Nursing Home, and social service medical worker for the Oneida County Department of Social Service.

Sonya was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Utica, where she was a deacon. She volunteered and was recognized for her outstanding service for her selfless hours of dedication to Seeds of Hope food pantry and numerous other community services organizations. Sonya enjoyed spending time with her family, gardening, cooking, going to the opera and reading, she loved books.

She is survived by her children, Robin Azzarito, Lauren Croke, Wendelin Gallager, Lisa Depperman, Bill Linakis, Jim Linakis, Mary Williams; beloved grandchildren, Steven Azzarito, Tiffany Azzarito, Jason Hatcher, Shauna Casavant, Michael Croke, Acasia Depperman, Ryan Croke, Mason Depperman, Victoria Gallagher, and great grandson Gavin Casavant. She is also survived by nieces and nephews, Susan Elsenbeck, Betsy Hemmel, Michael Smolinsky, and Matthew Smolinsky. She was predeceased by her husband, William Linakis, daughter, Karen Hatcher, and granddaughter Stephanie Hatcher.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the nurses and aides of the 4th floor at Utica Rehab for the attentive care and kindness shown to Sonya during her time with them.

Services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are with Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral and Cremation Services, 13 Oxford Rd., New Hartford.
