Richard (Dick) S. Lauterbach, 85, of New Hartford, passed away peacefully on October 13, 2024.

Richard was born on August 6, 1939 to Helen M. Getman and Richard E. Lauterbach in Utica, NY, and enjoyed spending summers at Raquette Lake. After graduating from Utica Free Academy in 1957, he went on to join the US Navy and served onboard the USS Frontier from 1957 to 1961.

He started his career at Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation (now National Grid) that same year, kickstarting a 35-year tenure with the company and working his way up to District Operator. He was an active member of IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers).

In 1965, Richard met Margaret Dunn, and they married on August 6, 1966, which coincidentally was also both of their birthdays. They were married for 31 years and had 5 children together, who were the pride of his life. He was an enthusiastic supporter of New Hartford Swimming and enjoyed officiating high school swim meets.

In 1998, Richard retired from Niagara Mohawk and enjoyed playing golf at the Newport Golf Club and having lunch at the American Legion.

Richard was predeceased by his daughter Anne Margaret Lauterbach, son, Stephen R. Lauterbach, MD, daughter Ellen L. Duffy and his granddaughter, Taylor Renée Nelson. He is survived by his daughter Karen von Mantey and husband Henning, grandsons Parker and Jared Nelson, all of Atlanta, GA, granddaughter Shanna Nelson of Charleston, SC, son Michael J. Lauterbach, wife Carine and daughters Sophia and Nina all of Westport, CT, grandson Theodore Lauterbach of New York, NY, sister Barbara Orellana, nephew Richard Orellana and wife Christine, great nephew Carson, great nieces Kimberly and Kira all of Mooresville, NC.

There will be no services, according to Richard’s wishes. Arrangements are with Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral and Cremation Services, 13 Oxford Rd., New Hartford.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to New Hartford Aquatics (formerly the New Hartford Knight Swim Club).

The family wishes to thank the Scharf Family for their support throughout the years, his lifelong friend Denys Clem, and the staff of Barton East, St. Luke’s Nursing Home, for the care he received during his stay there.
