Philip S. Abbass Sr., age 74, died peacefully after a long illness at Wynn Hospital on Thursday, December 12, 2024, with his loving wife Joan “Joni” (Waszkiewicz) Abbass by his side.

Phil was born on July 28, 1950, in Utica, NY, to the late Fay and Elizabeth (Anton) Abbass. He was educated in New Hartford Central Schools and graduated high school in 1968. Phil joined the U.S Air Force in 1969, he was deployed in the Vietnam War, serving until 1973. He married his high school sweetheart, Joan “Joni” Waszkiewicz on November 16, 1968, at St. Thomas Church in Clinton, NY.

Phil was a manager at Lifesake - Division of Faster Form Corp., located in Fort Lauderdale, FL. He was also the supervisor of the Broward County Blood Bank, located in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Phil loved watching and listening to Andy Griffith, he and Joni even took a trip to see Andy’s house in Mayberry.

Phil is survived by his wife of 56 years, Joni Abbass; his children, son Philip S. Abbass Jr. of Phoenix, AZ, daughter Lisa Marie (Walker) of Graham, NC,; grandchildren, Calvin Abbass, Christopher Abbass, Randy (Tabby) Ling, and Tammy Neese; brothers, David Abbass and Fay (Anne) Abbass; sisters, Yvonne Lavoie of Rhode Island, Kathy Allen of Clinton, NY, Bethanne Abbass of Dallas, TX, and Lorraine “Lorry” of Manhattan, CA,; sister-in-laws, Chris Abbass, Pamela (John) Ellerton, and Barabara Waszkiewicz; brother-in-law, Jim Lanza; many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, as well as great grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents, Fay and Elizabeth (Anton) Abbass; brother, Richard Abbass; sister, Elaine Abbass Lanza; brother-in-law, J.C. Waszkiewicz; and sister-in-law, Nancy Abbass.

The family would like to say how grateful they are for all the care and compassion Phil received at home with Acacia RN Liz and aide Mary. They would also like to thank the doctors and nurses on the 8th floor at Wynn Hospital for their care and compassion, including Dr. Chuenfer Lin, P.A. Sanela, and head nurse Kim Santomassino, Chelsea, Natalie and Jeanne. A special thank you for the Pastoral care from Father Pociecha and Sister Boyd, both continue to give Joni so much peace.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Friedel, Williams, and Edmunds Funeral and Cremation Services, 13 Oxford Road in New Hartford. A funeral service will take place immediately following calling hours at 11:30 a.m. Interment will be at Holy Trinity Cemetery, Utica, NY.
