Joseph Anthony Markason, formerly of Whitesboro, passed away peacefully on March 16, 2025. Born in Utica, the son of Anthony (Jennie) Markason, he was a first-generation American. Joe was compelled to serve from a young age and always put his best effort forth in any of his endeavors.
He served in the United States Navy in World War II as a Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class up until his honorable discharge in 1946. He then enrolled in Utica College, where he found passion in writing and journalism. Joe even named the college newspaper “The Tangerine,” a name that is still used to this day! He valued his education and was proud of his time as a Utica College Pioneer. Joe often attended various campus events and activities long after graduating in the inaugural class in 1949.
Joe then went on to attend Syracuse Law School, earning his law degree and being sworn in in 1952. He had a rewarding and accomplished career, even running for Judge. Joe always enjoyed serving and helping others and was a patron of the arts. He loved music, playing cards, and was an avid reader. He was an active member of the Utica Curling Club, serving as President from 1984-1986. Joe was a philanthropist and a member of a variety of community organizations, such as the Kiwanis and Rotary Club. However, he always maintained that his biggest accomplishment was his family.
Joe was united in marriage to Patricia (Burke) Markason on May 28, 1955, at Our Lady of Lourdes. Together, they welcomed their son, Robert, who was their world. Joe was blessed with four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. He always loved spending time with his family and would light up whenever his grandchildren were around. He made friends wherever he went, and always made others feel welcome. Joe was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend up until the end.
Joe is survived by his wife, Patricia, his son, Robert, his grandchildren, Joseph (Kimberly), Alexandra (Samir), Regina, and Zachary, as well as his great-grandchildren, Lorenzo, Melina, and Rocco. He was predeceased by his parents (Anthony and Jennie), brothers (Charles and Nick), and daughter-in-law (Lorrie Arcuri Markason).
Family and friends are invited to gather on Monday March 24, 2025, for visitation from 9:30am-10:30am at Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral and Cremation Services, 13 Oxford Rd, New Hartford, with a mass of Christian burial to follow at 11:00 AM at St. John the Evangelist Church. Internment will take place at Calvary Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association or Utica University, two organizations that held a special place in Joe’s heart.
