James E. Monahan, Jr., 89, of New Hartford died on Saturday, March 29, 2025, at his home.

He was born on February 12, 1936, in Watertown, MA, son of the late James E., Sr. and Mary Brady Monahan. He graduated from St. Patrick’s High School, Watertown, MA and served in US Army from 1955-1961. He married Marianne Lutz in New Hartford in 1967 and he worked as the maintenance supervisor for the Oneida County Airport in Oriskany.

James was a member of the Mary, Mother of Our Savior Parish, Our Lady of Lourdes campus and the Knights of Columbus. James was a longtime member of the New Hartford Fire Department where he served as Captain of the Fire Police. With his free time, he enjoyed golfing and watching the Boston Red Sox. His true love was spending time with his family especially his grandchildren on Big Moose Lake and wintering in Florida.

He is survived by his loving wife, Marianne Monahan, of New Harford; children, Jim Monahan and his wife, Mary of New Hartford, Kevin Monahan and his wife, Stephanie of New Hartford, Chris Monahan of Syracuse, Maureen McDonnell and her husband, Thomas of West Seneca and Bridget Monahan and her partner, Robert Harris of Mohawk; grandchildren, Daniel, Patrick Caitlin and Ainsley, Emilie, Aidan, Jacob and Mariah, Arleigh, Christopher Jr., and Chase, Catherine, Luke and Holly; sisters, Mary Hanley and Ruth Crenshaw; brothers in law, Louis “Butch” Baia, John and his wife Joan Lutz, sister in law Janice Lutz and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters, Ethel and Dorothy.

The family would like to offer a special thank you to Dr. Matthew Siegenthaler, Hospice and Palliative Care of New Hartford and the New Hartford Fire Department for all the care and support given to James.

The funeral will be on Thursday, April 3 at 12:00 pm from Mary, Mother of Our Savior Parish, Our Lady of Lourdes campus, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Calling hours will be on Wednesday, April 2 from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm at Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral and Cremation Services, 13 Oxford Rd., New Hartford.
