Born on October 22, 1926, in East Chicago, IN, Evelyn was the daughter of Charles Vajda and Ida (Daku) Vajda. She graduated from East Chicago Roosevelt High School in 1944. She worked as a receptionist/PBX operator at Blon Ox, Continental Foundry and Pullman Standard Research and Development.
Marrying in 1950, she and her husband of 51 years, Ernest S. Derjan, lived mostly in the northwest region of Indiana until retiring to Cameron, WI. Their retirement home on Prairie Lake was filled with family, friends, church, and many pontoon boat rides. Evelyn enjoyed reading, working on puzzles, and doing her word searches.
She is survived by her daughter, Deborah (John) Dye; grandson, Christopher (Jessica) Dye; great-granddaughters Emily and Lily Dye; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother, George C. Vajda, and sisters-in-law Eleanor Vajda and Irene Frisk.
At her request, no services will be held. The family will honor her at a private gathering at a later date. Arrangements are with Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral and Cremation Services, 13 Oxford Rd., New Hartford.
Evelyn always had a way with animals, and if considering a gift in her name please consider a local animal shelter.
