Eva (Dori) Steyer, age 88, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 27, 2025 at The Abraham House in Rome, NY.

She was born in Budapest, Hungary on November 13, 1936 and came to the United States in 1956 at the age of 20, courageously fleeing the country during the Hungarian Revolution with her fiancé Janos (John) Steyer. Their love and commitment to one another were symbolized on December 27,1956 when they were married – a happy union for over 62 years until his passing in 2019.

In 1966, Eva graduated from Utica School of Cosmetology and proudly worked as a hairdresser in her home while taking loving care of her children for well over 10 years. In 1980, she fulfilled her passion for sewing by working as a skilled seamstress in several local dress shops – Bridal Garden and Boutique, E. Cramer and Son, Sew Creative Interior Design and The Princess Shop.

In 1968, she was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Beside the love of her family and profession, she found great joy serving her Creator, Jehovah God and devoted many hours sharing her faith and teaching the Bible to others.

Eva is survived by her two children: son Peter (Shirley) and daughter Linda (Ken) Colerick; three grandchildren: Megan (Jared) Sowle, Lauren (David) Starr and Grant Colerick; two great grandchildren: Ava and Henry Starr whom she loved beyond words; her beloved brother and his wife Janos and Aranka Dori; nephews Zoltan and Tibor Dori with their families in Hungary, as well as many wonderful friendships she cherished. She was predeceased by her granddaughter Cassandra (Cassie) Steyer in 2023.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 8, 2025 at 2:30 pm at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 585 Trenton Rd, Utica, NY.

Our family would like to give a special “thank you” to the caregivers at the Abraham House, Rome, NY for their loving care of our dear mom over the past 2 months, with special gratitude to Emina, Tammy, Kelly, Sarah and Abbey.
