Cynthia (Cindy) Whitton, 73, of Clinton, died peacefully on Monday, December 2, 2024, at Wynn Hospital.

She was born on December 11, 1950, in North Hornell, NY, a daughter of Mary Louise Brown Gottschall and the late Glenn Gottschall. She was a 1968 graduate of Arkport Central School and a 1972 graduate of SUNY Potsdam. Cindy married George W. Whitton on August 12, 1978, in Hornell, NY. She was an elementary teacher at the Oxford Road School with the New Hartford Central Schools for over 33 years. She was a highly gifted teacher and was often assigned students who had difficulties with school. Cindy referred to her students as her “little Buckaroos” and if you did something cute you were “cuter than a bug’s ear.”

Cindy was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Utica, where she served as a Deacon and volunteered in various capacities. With her free time, she enjoyed crafting, sewing, and making Christmas Stockings for needy children.

Cindy enjoyed travel. Taking the train from Albany to New York City was always fun. She especially enjoyed spring trips to Sunset Beach, North Carolina, trips to New England with her mom, summer trips to Cape Cod (thank you, Marie!), and trips to Acadia National Park.

Following retirement, she was a caregiver to the late Fred Munson and the late Carol Gravlin. Everyone who knew Cindy knows that she was a very giving person.
She is survived by her husband, George W. Whitton; son, Patricio and one grandson, David Whitton; mother, Mary Louise Gottschall; sister, Gwen Gottschall who was her best friend; special friends from her teaching days, Jane Grant, Marie Oastler, Jean Morris, and Joan Spring, in addition to many other close friends. She was predeceased by her father, Glenn Gottschall and Miss Libby, her bossy Yorkshire Terrier.

Cindy’s family would like to offer a special thank you to the doctors, nurses and technicians at Wynn Hospital for all their care. Everyone at Wynn was attentive to her needs as she left this life.

The funeral will be on Monday at 1:30 p.m., at the New Hartford Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Hannah Ratliff officiating. A light lunch will be served after the service. Arrangements are with Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral and Cremation Services, 13 Oxford Rd., New Hartford.

In lieu of flowers, please consider the House of the Good Shepherd, Happy Birthday Cha Cha Cha, or the charity of one’s choice.
